ALF 25th Anniversary Celebration - October 15, 2011
About 75 ALF senior fellows and guests joined honored speaker Governor John Kitzhaber and several of his colleagues from the state legislature at the iconic Johnson Cabin located on the headwaters of the Metolius River in Central Oregon to celebrate 25 years of the American Leadership Forum in Oregon. Congressman Earl Blumenauer (Class I) led off describing the founding of ALF in Oregon with the leadership of Don Frisbee and other notable supporters, and how the ALF network has often supported his work as a U.S. congressman. Co-House Speakers Bruce Hanna (R – Roseburg) and Arnie Roblan (D – Coos Bay) both spoke about the historic opportunity – and challenges – presented by the 50-50 split in the House of Representatives between Democrats and Republicans. One senior fellow in attendance wrote us after the event, calling it "one of the most moving 'Oregonian' experiences I have ever had, and I felt honored to be there."
Other special guests included Chief Delvis Heath of the Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs who spoke about the history of the area pre-contact, and State Senator Betsy Johnson, who hosted the event and also spoke about her family’s history.
Central Oregon senior fellows conceived of and planned the entire event, which raised over $4200 for ALF scholarships. With special thanks to Jan McGowan (Class XV), Mary Krenowicz (Class XVI) and Cylvia Hayes (Class XXIV) for their superlative efforts in making the event a success. And our great thanks to the event donors and sponsors for their vital support: Standard Insurance (event sponsor), Sokol Blosser Winery, Oswego Hills Winery, Mahonia Winery, and Deschutes Brewery.
Special appreciation to Classes XXII, IX, VIII and XV for preparing and sharing a class vision statement for Oregon in the next 25 years.
Stage IV Leadership Workshop - May 13 to 15, 2011, Camp Kuratli Retreat Center, Boring Oregon
ALF Senior Fellows from chapters across the country attended a 2 ½ day workshop given by ALF Founder, Joseph Jaworski, and his colleague, Kazmirez Gozdz, at the Camp Kuratli Retreat Center in Oregon from May 13th to 15th. Based on Mr. Jaworski’s latest research on the formation of Stage IV leadership, participants were introduced to the foundational concept of this stage of leadership – also referred to as Renewing Leadership - which is a strong personal sense of possibility of actualizing hidden potential lying dormant in the universe, and the ability to access that underlying intelligence, or “source”, through deep personal work and contemplative practice. Senior fellows
from the Oregon Chapter who attended the workshop included: Avel Gordly, Class 3, Carol Turner, Class 5, Kent Snyder, Class 14, Kathy Bryon, Class 17, Terry Cross, Class 21, Cylvia Hayes, Class 24, Behzad Hosseini, Class 24, Fariborz Pakseresht, Class 24, Greg Ranstrom, Class 25 Facilitator, and Robin Teater.
ALF Annual Reception - MercyCorps Action Center, Portland (January 22, 2011)
Nearly 200 senior fellows and guests attended the ALF Reception & Silent Auction held last month at the brilliantly conceived and visually engaging Mercy Corps Action Center in Portland’s Old Town area. Class 23 members Johnell Bell and Mike Becker (pictured left) served as co-Masters of Ceremony for the program part of the event, delighting attendees with their 25th anniversary trivia game (fun tidbits ripped from the cultural, political and social headlines of 1986). The reception included ALF’s always fun Silent Auction – raising over $7,500 – and the (again) stupendously delicious food offerings prepared by the NW Natural catering service. Among the highlights of the evening was the attendance by several former participants of Class 3’s project, Camp Odyssey, who have restarted the project with the assistance of Oregon Solutions and other key senior fellows.
Capping the evening was a celebration of the 18 month journey and graduation into “senior fellowship” of Class 24, so poignantly acknowledged in the extraordinary speech given by class member Fariborz Pakseresht (pictured right).
ALF Board Retreat - Enterprise, Oregon (October 1st & 2nd, 2010)
Board Members: Robin Teater,
ALF Board Members met recently for a retreat in Enterprise, Oregon. After arriving in Eastern Oregon on Friday, October 1st, they enjoyed a beautiful hike through the Wallowa wilderness.
Board Members: Jan McGowan,
The board reconvened the following day at the home of Diane Snyder (Class 12). The retreat focused on how we create value as a statewide organization by promoting trust relationships and collaborative cultures within companies, and among diverse sectors and geographic regions. To strengthen our already active ALF committees, board members defined in what ways committees support the function of each other and discovered new ways for particular committees to add value to the overall mission.
Central Oregon Gathering (September 29, 2010)
Eli Ashley (Class 5 Tacoma chapter) and his wife Dottie hosted a picnic on a perfect autumn night for Central Oregon ALFers: Angela Boothroyd (Class 23), Neil Bryant (Class 5), Mary Krenowicz (Class 16), Karen Pringle (Class 20), and Judy Stiegler (Class 18). Greg Ranstrom, who currently facilitates Class XXV revealed no secrets from Mt. Adams but did reveal that Class 25 is stellar! Robin Teater shared tales of a 4 day raft trip on the Deschutes River coinciding with the only days the sun didn’t shine in Central Oregon this summer
Class 25 Welcome Reception (July 15, 2010)
Senior Fellows, guests and friends gathered Thursday, July 15th at the Regence Woolworth Building to welcome the newest class members of the American Leadership Forum of Oregon Fellows program. Those in attendance were treated to a delicious buffet, ice cold soda and a no-host bar selling beer and wine. The atmosphere was casual and relaxed with much conversation. The highlight of the evening was the ALF Class slideshow that featured a group photo from the “mountain” of every class – I to XXIII!
Mike Alexander, Class 22 and Peggy Maguire, Class 24 (both with the Regence Group) were the designated “hosts” of the event. Joe Gallegos, Class 17 and Board Chair, offered recollections of his experience as an ALF Fellow and officially welcomed Class 25 members to the organization. Patricia Martinez-Orozco, Class 19 and Selection Committee Member, had the honor of introducing the newest class members.
The reception was generously sponsored by The Regence Group.
